Supporting Employers to Meet Their Legal Obligations: Interview with Ed Milne at RPR Trades

At Little Green Button, we take pride in supporting our customers to make their workplaces safer for staff, visitors and clients. RPR Trades, a multi-office organisation operating in Australia, is one of our customers who has committed to staff safety and wellbeing.

RPR Trades specialises in providing tailored recruitment solutions and stands out in its field thanks to its unique and comprehensive approach. Focusing on optimised performance and rigorous risk mitigation, its approach is rooted in reducing workplace incidents. In fact, its protocols have enabled a 40% reduction in incidents in workplaces that use its workforce solutions.

This achievement not only highlights their commitment to safety but also underscores their respect for and retention of employees. RPR Trades’ strategy involves using micro specialists and industrial experts, ensuring that they cater to the specific needs of various industries.

RPR Trades has developed exclusive protocols that contribute significantly to creating a safer and more stable workforce. The company takes pride in its meticulous vetting and pre-screening processes, which are designed to assess candidates against numerous risk indicators. This thorough approach leaves little to chance, ensuring that every member of the workforce is well-suited for their role. The result is a workforce that is not only skilled and reliable but also one that enhances the overall performance and stability of the organisations they serve.

We interview Ed Milne, General Manager of People, Capability and Safety at RPR Trades, to find out more about the safety challenges the company has faced and how Little Green Button helps to protect its staff.

Ed has been in human resources for more than 20 years, in both generalist and specialist roles. He’s managed multiple businesses in recruitment, HR consulting and labour hire, and his role at RPR Trades covers people, capability and safety.

Work Health and Safety Act 2011: Positive Duty

RPR Trades began looking for a solution like Little Green Button due to changes in Australian legislation regarding the positive duty of an employer to promote physical and psychological safety.

“We felt that having the ability to alert other team members in the event that someone felt at risk or unsafe was a good step towards meeting that responsibility.

I had heard of Little Green Button previously, so I did some searching and found three main options, but the ability to work across both computer and mobile platforms with one system and one setup meant we chose Little Green Button.”

RPR Trades has multiple offices that are accessible to the general public, with lots of daily visitors. This poses a challenge in keeping staff safe from unexpected situations.

“Our offices are in locations accessible to the general public and we have multiple visitors to each office daily, for interviews, to collect PPE and for other reasons. As careful as you can be in vetting and screening people, there was still a risk to safety we felt we should be trying to minimise or remove.”

Providing Peace of Mind

Little Green Button’s implementation at RPR Trades offices has given staff peace of mind that a helping hand is not far away should any kind of situation arise.

“LGB is a fantastic solution to the areas of risk we were trying to minimise. Being able to set up multiple people within the business to receive alerts, even on mobile devices, means we are always able to respond immediately to any distress alarm raised.

It also means staff that need to travel to client sites have the same level of support and connectivity via their mobile devices.”

RPR Trades thankfully have not had to use Little Green Button since implementing it, but having a dedicated duress alarm system ready for all staff members to use, whether on or off site, offers them psychological safety at work. Should any kind of distressing or unsafe situation arise, all team members know they can use Little Green Button to call for help.

Ed’s top reasons for choosing Little Green Button:

  • Use across multiple devices and platforms
  • Tailored escalation paths and responder groups
  • Easy to implement
  • Fast system response
  • Geographical coverage

Little Green Button is invaluable in ensuring the safety of staff who interact with visitors and the general public. Its user-friendly interface that operates on desktop and mobile makes it an ideal solution for professionals working off-site or alone as well as in the office.

Our thanks to Ed Milne at RPR Trades.
